Foal Registrations.

Firstly, congratulations on breeding your foal.

Reading the Registration Guide decide which studbook your foal is legible for.

You have 90 days from the birth of your foal to compile the foal registration documentation and issue it to the Registrar; unfortunately any later than that and DNA parentage testing may be required.

** We have issued a new form for Registering foals as from 1st January 2016 in order to comply with new EU/DEFRA Rules.  The new from includes an updated registration form and a new ID which must be completed by your Veterinary Surgeon **

Registration document and ID Form to be completed by Vet

You have 90 days to send to the Registrar the following:-

  • The fully completed registration document and ID Sheet completed by a veterinary surgeon and which must include the microchip sticker.
  • The full fee due for the registration.

“The Society will enter into the stud book, Trakehners and partbred Trakehners that are eligible for entry under the Society’s breed criteria, without discrimination on account of their country of origin.”

  • For part bred passport applications, provide documentary evidence of the foal’s non Trakehner sire or dam including a photocopy of their passport pages which details the studbook they are registered with, their registration number and a full copy of their pedigree page.

If chilled semen insemination is used, then an attestation letter on headed paper signed by the inseminating veterinary surgeon or qualified insemination technician is required to be submitted with the registration documents. The letter must include; full details of the mare inseminated; dates of insemination; details of the stallion used.

If frozen semen insemination is used DNA parentage testing is compulsory.

DNA parentage is an additional fee to the registration fee and at owner/ breeders expense.

For DNA testing the breeder must submit a sample of mane from the foal, mare and stallion. When registered stallions are used DNA profiles are usually available and samples not required. If the mare has had a DNA test undertaken in the past the DNA profile is usually available. If in doubt please consult the Registrar. The DNA testing fee is £50 per sample of mane.

Once testing is complete and parentage proven then the normal registration procedure is carried out.

Send the completed documents with the required cheque to the Registrar. Alternatively you can pay online using the links below.

Once the paperwork is received by the Registrar it will be checked according to Pure Bred and Part Bred rules to ensure that all details are in place i.e.breed details, date of birth, colour, sex and the covering details are ticked i.e. Natural, AI chilled, AI frozen..

The ID page must be completed signed and stamped by a vet and microchipping position marked along with the microchip number on the form, the owner must also complete and sign their part of the form. All microchips are checked against the Horse Passport Agency online database and we also keep all the microchip numbers updated on this database.

If the documentation is correct it is sent for passport production and all relevant information is added to the Trakehners UK database record.

If the paperwork is incomplete or incorrect then the Registrar will refer back to the breeder for more information.

Once the passport production is complete the passport is stamped and signed by the Registrar. The passport will automatically be completed to indicate that the horse is not for human consumption.

The passport is then sent to the owner / breeder by Recorded Delivery with a letter asking the owner to notify that it is received safely.

Every effort is made to issue the completed passport to the Breeder within 20 working days from receipt of correct paperwork and payment of fees. If there is to be a delay for any reason then the registrar will contact the Breeder within 15 days and give an estimated time when the passport will be issued.

Since 2010 it has been mandatory to have your foal microchipped.

Foal Branding.
